Letter of recommendation for Ms Ananya Rao

I have known Ms Ananya Rao for three years: she took my courses Machine Dynamics (fifth semester) and Control Systems (sixth semester), and I guided her final-year project from July 2023 to May 2024. I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at [College] and have taught for fourteen years.

In Control Systems she was among the top five of 64 students. What I remember more is how she worked: when her first controller design for the lab rig oscillated, she did not tune it by trial and error but went back to the model, found that she had ignored the sensor delay, and presented the correction to the class.

Her final project, a vibration monitor for a pump in our workshop, was largely her own. She wrote the firmware, ran the measurements over two weeks and compared them with the maintenance log, which showed a bearing fault four days before the scheduled inspection. Her report was clear enough that the workshop still uses her procedure.

She is reliable, asks precise questions and accepts criticism without becoming defensive. I believe she is well prepared for a research-oriented Master’s in [field] and recommend her for admission.

Please contact me if you need any further information.

Make it your own

  • A good letter says how long and in what role the referee knows you, and gives two or three concrete examples.
  • Universities want the referee’s own words: share the sample, your CV and your project details, and let the referee write.
  • It is dated, signed, on letterhead, with the referee’s contact details so the university can verify it.
  • Do not copy it: replace every detail with your own and write it in your own words.
