Studienkolleg in Germany after Class 12: who needs it and how it works
Most Indian students with only Class 12 need a Studienkolleg, a free preparatory year at a public university, before a Bachelor’s in Germany.
Figures last confirmed 4 October 2026 against the official sources linked below.
The courses
- T: mathematics, science and engineering subjects.
- W: business, economics and social sciences.
- M: medicine, biology and pharmacy.
- G: humanities; S: languages.
At universities of applied sciences the courses are called TI, WW, GD and SW. Your course decides which subjects you can study afterwards.
How it works
- Reach German B1–B2 in India and get a certificate.
- Apply to a Studienkolleg (each one says how); many test you in an entrance exam.
- Study two semesters, then pass the Feststellungsprüfung.
- Apply to Bachelor’s programmes that match your course.
Questions people ask
- Do I need a Studienkolleg after Class 12 from India?
- Usually yes: Class 12 alone does not give direct entry to a German Bachelor’s. Exceptions include qualifying JEE Advanced (for related subjects) or completed years at a recognised Indian university.
- How long is the Studienkolleg?
- Usually two semesters; very good students can sometimes finish in one. It ends with the Feststellungsprüfung, which gives access to related degree programmes throughout Germany.
- Is the Studienkolleg free?
- Public Studienkollegs are generally free of charge apart from the semester fee.
- What German level do I need for the Studienkolleg?
- About B1–B2 to be admitted (TUM, for example, asks for B2); the Studienkolleg teaches up to C1.
